Athena Coaching Solutions have been working to better understand and deliver relevant management training to support businesses across all industries. The role of the manager/leader is simple; it’s a directive, task-orientated style of getting the job done effectively and efficiently in line with a company’s mission, vision, and values. There is also the additional, often overlooked, responsibility of the development of their employees, who are of course an integral part of the success of the company. Personal development should be an intrinsic part of any organisation’s growth and effective managers, adept in developing their teams, are a crucial ingredient in enabling business success and in retaining a competent and motivated workforce.
Some managers believe that they are coaching but, very often, they are in fact giving advice and making suggestions (mentoring) or advising and problem solving (instructing/tutoring). Sound familiar? To have ‘coaching conversations,’ managers must first learn to coach and break old habits of being ‘too helpful.’
There is, of course, a place when being more directive is required, for example, when a person is new to a task or a situation, when safety factors are involved, when time is of the essence or when facts need to be imparted quickly and accurately but, once an individual is on their way, you want them to take ownership and responsibility to allow them to grow and for your time to be better utilised. This can be achieved through using a ‘coaching’ management style. Our Effective Management Course is designed to equip managers with the skills to adapt, implement and practice different coaching approaches to instil a deeper level of learning and development, more accountability and ownership, and sustainability of change.
For managers, coaching is a multifaceted skill that takes practice and regular reflection. There is, of course, a place for instruction and mentoring but coaching requires expertise in coaching, not necessarily the subject in hand. Coaching isn't about giving the answer(s), it's about helping to locate the answer(s). Great coaches encourage self-belief, accountability, ownership, and responsibility which, in turn, creates sustained performance.
